Christmas Musings #2
It was a little after half past ten when our pastor walked into the church. He
ascended the steps to the podium and took his usual place by the lectern.
"I've been reprimanded this morning," he began, "because of the secular nature
of my tie."
There was a murmur of amusement from the congregation: Keith is renowned for
his ties and waistcoats, and we knew that the reprimand hadn't been even
remotely serious.
"I don't know if any of you remember an old song called Deck of Cards. It's
about a soldier who is brought up in front of his officers under the accusation
of playing cards in church, and it's only then that he reveals that each card
has a symbolic Biblical value, and that the numbers and suits add up to the
days of the week and months of the year. You'll be relieved to know that I'm
not going to go through it all now."
Pause (during which I'm sure I could detect an audible sigh of relief).
"On my tie, there is a gift. And that's the gift. On my tie, there is a tree,
and that for me represents the cross. On my tie, there is a Christmas pudding -
and that's the feast in the kingdom. Amen!"
Rapture.
