Road 'hogs

We got back from High Wycombe a few minutes ago to find two large round stones - the size of small melons, perhaps - sitting in the middle of the drive. I inched the car forward to get a closer look, when one of them moved. It was then that we realised it was a pair of hedgehogs: our first sighting of anything hedgehog shaped, in fact, since we moved in. As we stared at them it occurred to me that I'd never seen two of them together in the wild before.

The two creatures appeared to be having a shag. As I gunned the engine and inched further towards them they broke apart: one went scurrying into the bushes by the kitchen door while the other headed for the back garden. Emily put down a pouch of foul-smelling cat food that we've kept handy - the sort of thing that we tend not to give Woody as he's on a dry food diet. We will have to hope that one of the spiky ones gets to it before he does - if I find the kitchen floor smeared with diarrhea tomorrow morning, I'll know that this probably wasn't the case.

It's bloody typical, though. You wait ages for a hedgehog, and then two show up at once.
