For England and St George
On the way down to the M4, Wednesday.
"What's this song about, anyway?"
"Well, it's a chance meeting between two ex-lovers. George has bumped into
her again after a year. And from what he says, last Christmas, they had a bit
of a thing, and he obviously got in way too deep, whereas she just used him
for sex. Quick shag, and that's it. But he fell for her completely and got severely
burned in the process."
"So he gave her his heart?"
"That's about the size of it."
"It's stupid!" said Emily. "If he gave her his heart, and then
she dumped him, she wouldn't give it away. She'd gve it back."
"I never really thought about it. I agree it is a bit of a mixed image."
"It's crap. And after a year he's tracked her down just to tell her that
she was horrible to him?"
"No. I think they meet up at a party or something. And she doesn't know
who he is, which suggests that he was another notch on the bedpost."
"Right, right. But who's the 'someone special' he keeps talking about?"
"He doesn't know yet," I said. "He just wants this girl to know
that it's going to be anyone but her."
"Thing is," she said, "he keeps going on about it. And on and
on. Saying how much she no longer matters, but - "
" - but he's in denial," I interrupted. "And he actually admits
as much when he says 'If you kiss me now, I know you'll fool me again'. After
all this time, he's still not over it, however much he pretends."
Pause.
"It's still silly, though."
"It is, isn't it?"
